Classes are fun, informative, and taught by someone with 30 years of behavior and training experience. Terry Jester is the past director of Behavior and Training at the Marin Humane Society in Novato, California,. She has written several books about the training of dogs and cats and appeared on many radio and television shows. A past member of the California Rescue Dog Association, she spent thirteen years as a California State Humane Officer and instructor at the Northern California State Humane Officer’s Training Academy. Terry’s expertise includes the behavior of all types of companion animals. She has worked extensively with problem pets, horses, reptiles, and is especially fond of working with dogs that other trainers give up on. From Terry’s point of view, there is never any reason to give up on a pet with problem behaviors. Through owner education, behavior modification, training, and effort, most problems can be overcome.

Snake Proof Your Dog

Registration Form  (to fill out and mail in)

Afraid of rattlesnakes and the harm they can cause your dog? Want to teach your dog that snakes are to be avoided but don't know how? Don't want to have to look at a snake but still want your dog snake proofed -- as long as YOU don't have to watch? WE CAN HELP!

Rocky Mountain Rawhide offers workshops on snake proofing your dog. Used by the Larimer Search and Rescue Dog Teams, hunting clubs, hikers and obedience training enthusiasts, "snake proofing" is easy, affordable, and safe. YOU don't even have to ever lay eyes on a snake if you don't want to. One of our trainers can take your dog through the workshop for you.

Snake proofing your dog takes approximately one-and-a-half to two hours and involves showing the dog both live and dead, reanimated (moving) snakes. When your dog shows any interest at all in the snake, he is given an electric correction from the collar we put on him for training purposes. He is given every opportunity to investigate snakes but will be corrected each time he shows interest. The behavior we instill in the dog using this method is to walk the other way when a snake is spotted.

Most dogs learn very quickly that snakes are to avoided. Refresher courses are also available at a very low cost and people are encouraged to attend every once in a while to keep their dogs safer from the threat of a rattlesnake bite.

Courses are offered three times a year. Spring, summer, and early fall. Space is limited so sign up early!  The next training is Saturday May 8, 2010. Sessions are available at 1:00, 2:30, and 4:00 pm.

Download our registration form and send it in. Soon, you'll be walking the trails in Larimer County more confidently, knowing that your dog wants NOTHING to do with a rattlesnake.

Boarding Training (Basic Obedience)

Dogs in our boarding/training program are taught all of the basic obedience commands. Heel, Sit Stay, Down Stay, Wait at Doors, and Come. Minimum age at start of this type of training is 5.5 months. Minimum stay is 3 weeks. 4 weeks is recommended. Dogs stay in our air conditioned and heated kennel. They are taken out for training minimally twice a day. Toward the end of their stay dogs are “proofed” in a variety of places in order to build confidence and reliability. We take them to Old Town Fort Collins, the dog parks, and any other place we feel they need to go in order to learn that good manners are required in every situation that they encounter. Cost: $30.00 per day.

Boarding Training (Problem Solving)

In addition to basic obedience we offer a problem solving program geared toward dogs who need some help in achieving or maintaining social skills. We help dogs with aggression issues, we encourage getting along with other dogs, and we reduce separation anxiety, hyper vigilance, and destructive behaviors. One week minimum stay. $40.00 per day.
