 Family Dog Short Course

Registration Form  (to fill out and mail in)

Our Family Dog Short Course is a four week intensive class for any dog over 5 months old. Everything that is normally taught in a 6 week long class is taught in the Short Course. Because it is an intensive class only 9 people and dogs are allowed in the course at one time. This creates very hands on approach and classes can and are routinely adjusted to meet the needs of each individual in class. As classes are held outside weather should be a factor in determining if this is the right class for you and your dog. During winter months people should dress warmly and short coated dogs should have sweaters. In hot weather dogs who are prone to heat stress (bulldogs) may not be comfortable in this particular class. The class covers all basic commands (walking on a loose leash, sit, down, stay, wait and come) and dogs are taught to get along with other dogs and greet strangers without jumping. Cost is $95 per dog. All members of the family are encouraged to attend.

  • The next available Short Course is scheduled for February 25th at 11:00 am (Saturday) and will meet at VCA Fort Collins Animal Hospital 4900 South College Ave., Fort Collins, CO. 80525.
  • The instructor is Terry Jester.
  • All dogs must have proof of immunizations: Distemper, Parvo, Bordetella, Parainfluenza, Adenovirus.

Classes are fun, informative, and taught by someone with 30 years of behavior and training experience. Terry Jester is the past director of Behavior and Training at the Marin Humane Society in Novato, California,. She has written several books about the training of dogs and cats and appeared on many radio and television shows. A past member of the California Rescue Dog Association, she spent thirteen years as a California State Humane Officer and instructor at the Northern California State Humane Officer’s Training Academy. Terry’s expertise includes the behavior of all types of companion animals. She has worked extensively with problem pets, horses, reptiles, and is especially fond of working with dogs that other trainers give up on. From Terry’s point of view, there is never any reason to give up on a pet with problem behaviors. Through owner education, behavior modification, training, and effort, most problems can be overcome.

Snake Avoidance Training

Registration Form

Offered to all immunized dogs 5 months old and older

This 2 hour workshop and training session creates a dog who will avoid snakes at every opportunity. We use both live (bull snakes) and reanimated (dead, thawed rattlesnakes) in order to first test each dog on their reaction to snakes and then teach the dog that snakes are to be avoided. No snakes are harmed in this workshop. Bullsnakes are released after the class and the reanimated rattlesnakes are fresh road kill we have found. We do use an “E” collar (electronic) on the dogs in parts two and four of the work shop.
Part One: Individual dogs are tested to see how they will react to snakes (some dogs naturally avoid snakes and no further training is required).
Part Two: Dogs who are curious or non-reactive to snakes take part in our snake training practicum where they are taught to avoid snakes when they see or hear them.
Part Three: Informational lecture about our native snakes. Effectiveness of snake vaccines, antivenon and what to do if you or your pet is bitten. Part Four: Retest with a live snake to make sure each dog understands that snakes are to be avoided.
Skills Taught: Dogs should leave the area or jump away from a snake when they see it, hear it, or smell it. Format: Small groups of dogs (3 to 5) are taken one at a time for training.
Afraid of Snakes? The owner of the dog does not have to participate. A VCA Fort Collins Animal Hospital staff member can take the dog through the workshop for a fee ($20 additional).
Date/Times: TBA
Location: Spring Canyon Dog Park, at the west end of Horsetooth Road.
Cost: $75 for one dog. Same household/multi dog discount available ($50 each additional dog). Dogs who have taken OUR snake proofing workshop and just wish to retest their dog(s) $25 each dog.
